Rosacea treatment

Rosacea usually starts from a middle age, it is more common in women and in people with lighter skin type. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory reaction of the skin. This is visible as a butterfly-shaped redness on the cheeks, nose and sometimes on the forehead and chin. It can be distinguished with a vascular component and an acne component. Often dilated blood vessels (couperose) bumps and pus heads are also visible. The skin can also be sensitive, feel burning and become red quickly (flushing). Sometimes hyperplasia of the soft tissues of the nose (rhinophyma) occurs. The difference with acne vulgaris and other acne forms is the age at which rosacea occurs, the vascular component and the limited localization.

Treatment of rosacea

The exact cause of rosacea is still unknown. Microorganisms are called, the best-known association is the demodex mite. However, this is unproven. Rosacea treatment focuses on the symptoms that are present. During the consultation, the skin therapist makes a customized treatment plan. This is because different symptoms can be present. The following therapies can be performed during treatment. Sometimes multiple therapies are combined.

Treatment of rosacea, redness and flushing in rosacea

If dilated vessels (couperose) are present, treatment will be performed with the Nd-YAG vascular laser. The light from the laser is absorbed by blood in the blood vessel. The energy is converted into heat, which destroys the vessel. The remains of the broken vessel will be cleared away by the body. With even redness and flushing, treatment is carried out with IPL 550 nm. The superficial dilated vessels are destroyed by the light.

Treatment of acne in rosacea

If any inflammation or pimples are present, they can be gently removed. Because the rosacea skin is very sensitive, not every peeling can be applied. Mild peels with lactic or mandelic acid have a positive effect. Lactic acid has an antibacterial effect and kills organisms such as fungi, yeast and the demodex mite associated with rosacea. The acids in the peeling will cause the top layer of skin to peel off, initiating the skin’s cell renewal process and improving the skin’s resistance. Mandelic acid also has an antibacterial and sebum-reducing effect.

It can then be treated with the Nd-YAG Laser 1064 nm. The heat from the laser penetrates the sebaceous glands, causing them to shrink and inhibit sebum production. The laser also creates an oxygen-rich environment, which is unfavorable for the acne bacteria.

Number of treatments and the expected result

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition, which means that it will never completely disappear. The complaints will not fully heal. However, the symptoms can be treated to keep the skin as calm as possible through various interventions and products. On average 4-6 treatments are advised for optimal results, but due to the chronic nature, maintenance treatments will be required. The treatments are performed every 4-6 weeks.

Products used by rosacea

Certain skin care products also belong to the treatment of rosacea. The skin is often very sensitive with rosacea and can get worse if the skin becomes irritated from wrong products. Certain skin care products that contain active ingredients to soothe the skin and regulate blood flow to the vessels can reduce the symptoms of rosacea and increase the result of the treatment. The skin therapists at Huid & Laser Utrecht are happy to advise you on these products. Below you will find products that can be used as home treatment.
