Hidradenitis Supperativa (HS)

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is also known as acne inversa or acne ectopica. There is a chronic inflammation of the hair follicles. This often occurs in areas where the larger sweat glands are located, such as the groin, armpits and buttocks. Deep, large inflammations can arise that can cause pain symptoms. These inflammations often leave red to purple scars, in which adhesions of connective tissue and corridors are visible.

How does HS arise?

The opening of the hair follicle is blocked by swelling or keratinized skin, clogging the hair follicle. Due to this blockage, all dander accumulates in the hair follicle, which can cause the wall of the sweat gland to burst at some point. This releases a lot of sebum and pus. Because the sebaceous gland drainage ducts cannot handle the large amount of sebum, the sebum finds its own way out, creating new corridors and tunnels (fistulas) under the skin. These fistulas are often interconnected and can leave painful scars.

Causes of HS

The exact cause of the occurrence of hidradentis is not yet fully known. Hereditary predisposition often plays a role, but there are many other factors that can influence the development or worsening of hidradentitis. The condition often develops after puberty, in which male hormones play a role. We often see that in women complaints about menstruation or pill use worsen and improve during menopause. Triggers such as obesity, bacteria, smoking, sweating, friction from tight clothing and frequent shaving can also have an adverse effect.
